Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
2nd day: Campitello / Altilia – Sepino Archaeological Way / Guardiaregia / Campitello (km 82)
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure by own means for Altilia - Sepino. Arrival in the historic center of Sepino and meeting with your guide. The historic center of Sepino is a small jewel of medieval architecture in which sober and elegant Renaissance buildings are inserted. We start from the central square and, after a passage through its alleys, we take the route to reach "Terravecchia", a Samnite fortress with mighty walls that had to face the assaults of the Roman troops led by the consul Papirio Cursore in 293 BC. during the III Samnite War. We continue to go down to the valley until we reach the Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela which will bring you to the entrance door of the Roman city of Altilia. Before the Romans, a small but prosperous Samnite commercial center already existed in this place. With the victory of Rome over the Samnites, a thriving town was born here: Saepinum, which soon acquired importance in the Roman world thanks to the industriousness of its inhabitants and the rich families who resided here. Saepinum, defined as “the city of tratturo”, has a rhomboid shape with four doors placed at the ends of the Decumano and the Cardo. The walls, in uncertain reticulated work, were built just before 4 AD; along their path there are 25 circular and two octagonal towers. Lunch in a restaurant during the excursion.
In the afternoon the itinerary continues to Guardiaregia, where you will be enchanted by its natural beauty, among woods, caves and the San Nicola waterfall and the Quirino canyon, which are part of one of the largest WWF Oasis in central Italy. Here the altitude goes from 600 meters to 1823 meters of Mount Mutria. Entering the oasis you will cross the San Nicola path where you will admire the Quirino gorge and the San Nicola waterfall from above with a jump of 100 meters. Walking, nature will lead you to the foot of the "Tre Frati", three centuries-old beech trees that seem to touch the sky, whose the oldest is 500 years old. From here, getting to the “Cul di Bove” caves is really short and sometimes looking up, you might spot the Red Kite, the Buzzard and the Peregrine Falcon. The duration of the visit is approximately 2 hours.
Return to Campitello Matese, but not before stopping in Boiano, famous for its cow's milk mozzarella and dairy processing of the highest excellence. It is said that the town, close to the sources of the Biferno river, was born at the behest of a group of young Samnites who wanted to build their city right at the point where the ox stopped during the transhumance (here passes the Pescasseroli - Candela Tratturo), and for this reason today we find Bojano from the ancient Bovianum. Don’t miss the visit to the fortified medieval village, called Civita di Bojano which dominates the town. Return to Campitello Matese, dinner and overnight.
3rd day: Campitello / Roccamandolfi / Monteroduni / Isernia (km. 60)
Breakfast at the hotel. Check-out and departure by own means to Roccamandolfi, about 20 km down towards the valley. Once in Roccamandolfi, at the entrance of the town you will meet your guide who will take you for a walk in this picturesque mountain center at the foot of the Matese, which has linked its name to the Risorgimento period and to the phenomenon of banditry, recalled with the Documentation Center on brigandage. But what stands out to the eye, as you get to the town, are the ruins of the Rocca, a castle of Lombard origin overlooking a hill with breathtaking view and, at its side, the now famous Tibetan Bridge, a growing destination for many visitors. Your journey continues by car to the west coast, overcoming some hairpin bends and beech woods. You will arrive in Monteroduni, a town of Lombard origin which was plundered three times by the Saracens who carried out enormous devastation. Was towards the end of 800 AD. that the castle was subsequently built with imposing towers and surrounding walls which is today the Pignatelli Castle (entrance and visit of the Castle). History here mixes with gastronomy and the products that the earth offers: olive oil and the Pentro Red Wine. But for music lovers, do you know that one of the greatest Jazz guitarists is originally from Monteroduni? In fact, between July and August in the gardens of the Castle, there is one of the most important Jazz festivals dedicated to him: The Eddie Lang Jazz Festival.
Your day ends with a visit to Monteroduni, but to delight your palate and make you have a snack, we will let you have a tasting in one of the growing wineries and oil companies, which is based in Monteroduni.
Arrival in Isernia and overnight in a Dimora Storica. Free dinner.
